Bihar
GangaKosiBihar๐ Why in News?
Political discussion in Bihar often links Farakka with sediment accumulation, reduced river gradient and a possible backwater effect.
However, an examination answer should avoid reducing Bihar's extremely complex flood problem to one structure alone.
Syllabus & Relevance
Paper: GS-1
Theme: Geography
Static Foundation
Bihar's floods result from a combination of very high monsoon rainfall in Himalayan catchments; sediment-rich Himalayan rivers; low-gradient alluvial plains; river-channel migration; embankment-related constraints; drainage congestion; intense rainfall inside Bihar; land-use change; and cross-border river dynamics involving Nepal.
Thus Farakka should be treated as one component of a much larger basin-management question, not as the sole cause of Bihar's floods.
