The Farakka Barrage is situated in West Bengal on the Ganga, close to the Bangladesh border.
Its central historical objective was to divert part of the Ganga's flow through a feeder canal towards the Bhagirathi-Hooghly system, helping maintain navigability and reduce sediment-related problems affecting Kolkata Port.
