📌 Why in News?
The existing treaty was signed in New Delhi on 12 December 1996. It remains in force for 30 years and can be renewed by mutual consent.
The treaty applies principally to the sharing of Ganga waters at Farakka during the lean season from 1 January to 31 May.

Water sharing is calculated for 10-day periods.

If flow at Farakka falls below 50,000 cusecs in a 10-day period, the two governments are required to enter immediate consultations for emergency adjustment based on equity, fair play and avoiding harm to either party.
